How to create or verify an MD5 digest

  1. 01

    Choose text or file

Text uses UTF-8 without normalization. Choose File bytes to hash an original file, including an empty file. The filename and MIME type are not part of the digest.

  2. 02

    Create the digest

Stay on the Hash tab and press Create digest. The local engine computes the digest and shows it in the read-only MD5 digest field as 32 lowercase hexadecimal characters, the same spelling used by release pages and checksum files.

  3. 03

    Or verify against a reference

Switch to the Verify tab, paste the published value into Expected MD5 digest, and press Verify digest. Letter case and surrounding whitespace are normalized before comparison, and the status line answers Digest matches or Digest does not match.

  4. 04

    Copy or save the digest

Use Copy digest for the clipboard or Download .txt to save the value as toolars-md5-digest.txt. Until a digest exists, the workspace says so instead of copying or saving an empty value, so a slip never produces a blank file.

  5. 05

    Clear between checks

Clear empties the input, the expected digest, and the result in one step, and the status returns to Ready. Nothing is kept between runs, so a list of identifiers can be checked one after another without leftovers.

Your input stays in the browser.

MD5 Hash & Verify uses its verified local execution path and does not create a hidden input or output history.

Local execution

Runs inside the current browser tab.

No hidden processing

Active tool data never becomes a Toolars document record.

No account required

Use the core workflow without creating a profile. Favorites sync to your account after you sign in.

Immediate reset

Clear the tab and the active working data is gone.

When MD5 Hash & Verify is useful

Integrity checks

Compare a known digest with locally hashed text or configuration data.

Candidate verification

Verify a value you already know without attempting unsafe brute-force recovery.

Legacy interoperability

Inspect required MD5 or SHA values while keeping their security limits explicit.

What MD5 Hash & Verify actually does

A legacy admin panel still indexes accounts by the MD5 of an email address, and a support question means confirming which digest a given address produces. An old backup script stored MD5 sums of the records it exported, and a spot check has to happen before a restore. A tutorial asks you to confirm a short string against a printed checksum. MD5 Hash & Verify runs the algorithm in a local engine, so the string being checked — often an internal identifier — never travels to a server.

Common questions

What input is accepted?
Text is hashed as entered in UTF-8 without normalization (up to 1 MiB). Files use their original bytes, including an empty file, in 1 MiB chunks up to 256 MiB; filename and MIME type are excluded. The cancellable local Worker has a 15-second run limit. A matching digest does not authenticate the source of the reference.
What form must the expected digest take?
Exactly 32 hexadecimal characters; letter case and surrounding whitespace are normalized automatically. Anything else is rejected before hashing, because no MD5 digest can look like that — so a pasted value with a stray character fails fast instead of silently mismatching.
Is MD5 still safe to use?
For spotting accidental corruption in non-adversarial data, yes. For security decisions, no: MD5 collisions are practical, so do not use it to judge whether data is trustworthy — SHA-256 or SHA-512 fit that job. And like every digest here, MD5 is one-way; this tool never reverses or brute-forces a hash.
Can this tool reverse or crack a hash?
Verification compares digests of the selected input locally; it does not decrypt a digest or authenticate its source.
Can I hash a file instead of text?
Yes. Choose File bytes and select a local file up to 256 MiB. The Worker reads 1 MiB chunks; it never uploads the file. A cancelled or timed-out run produces no digest.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Hashing runs fully inside the current browser tab, input and digests are not retained, and no account is required. Pressing Clear or closing the tab discards every field, so the only copy of what you checked is the one you choose to keep.
