How to generate Open Graph meta tags

  1. 01

    Write the title and description

Fill Title (up to 120 characters) and Description (up to 300). The title is required — generating without one stops with a named error — while the description is optional and becomes og:description when present. Both fields stop accepting input at their limits.

  2. 02

    Add the URLs

Enter the Canonical URL, which must be an absolute HTTP or HTTPS address, and an optional Image URL, which must also be absolute when present. Invalid addresses are rejected with a named error before anything is generated, so a relative path or a bare domain never slips into the tags.

  3. 03

Set the site name and type

Add a Site name of up to 100 characters and pick a Content type: Website, Article, or Product. The type becomes the og:type value and the site name becomes og:site_name — leave it empty and that line is simply omitted from the markup.

  4. 04

    Generate the tags

Press Generate meta tags. The markup is assembled locally as one meta element per line with every value attribute-escaped, and the finished output must stay within the local limit of 16,000 characters. Load sample fills a complete article example and generates it in one click.

  5. 05

    Review and copy

Check the representative share card — it shows the site name, or the hostname of the canonical URL when no site name is set, above the title and description — and read the generated markup in the output pane. Editing any field clears the markup until you generate again. Then use Copy meta tags for the clipboard or Download HTML to save the tags as toolars-open-graph-meta.html for your page's head.

What Open Graph Meta Generator actually does

A developer is about to ship a landing page and wants the link to unfurl properly when the team posts it in chat. She writes a 70-character title, a two-sentence description, and the production URL, sets the type to Website, and generates the six lines of tags. Open Graph Meta Generator assembles the og:title, og:type, og:url, og:description, og:image, and og:site_name lines with safe escaping, and shows a representative share card next to the markup so she can sanity-check the truncation before pasting the snippet into the head. The draft copy and the unreleased URL stay in the browser tab — no validation pings, no uploads.

Common questions

Which tags are generated?
Always og:title, og:type, and og:url; plus og:description, og:image, and og:site_name when those fields are filled. Each line is a standard meta element with a property attribute, ready to paste into a page head, and optional lines are omitted entirely rather than emitted empty.
How is the content escaped?
Every value is attribute-escaped before it enters the markup: ampersands, double and single quotes, and angle brackets are replaced with their entity forms. That keeps titles containing quotes or special characters from breaking the tag, and each value is trimmed of surrounding whitespace first.
What are the validation rules and limits?
The Title is required; the Canonical URL must be an absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL, and so must the Image URL when present. Lengths cap at 120 characters for the title, 300 for the description, and 100 for the site name, and the finished markup must stay within 16,000 characters.
What does the representative share card show?
The card prints the site name above the title and description, falling back to the hostname of the canonical URL when the Site name field is empty. It is a representative preview of how the values read together, drawn locally — not a pixel-perfect render of any particular platform, since each platform crops and truncates differently.
Is anything uploaded or fetched?
No. The markup is assembled and the share card previewed entirely inside this browser tab; the image URL is written into the tags but never fetched here. No account is required, and Reset restores the default example values.
