What URL Slug Generator actually does

Every published page needs a slug: the blog post titled with an em dash and an ampersand, the documentation section whose heading carries accented characters, the tag label that must survive being pasted into a route. URL Slug Generator applies the same deterministic rules every time, right in the browser, so the slug you test locally is the slug that ships in production — and one shared rule set means the whole team gets identical slugs from identical titles. Draft titles — including ones for unreleased content — stay on the device the whole time, and there is nothing to sign into before you start.

Common questions

What exactly happens to accents and symbols?

Text is normalized so accents detach from letters and are removed (é becomes e), ampersands expand to the word and, apostrophes are dropped, and any remaining run of characters that are not letters or numbers becomes a single separator. Repeated separators collapse into one, and the result is lowercased and trimmed at both ends, so leading and trailing separators never survive either.

What happens to Chinese, Japanese, or other non-Latin text?

It is preserved. The cleanup keeps letters and numbers from every script and only strips accent marks and punctuation, so a Japanese or Chinese title keeps its characters in the slug. Script-internal punctuation such as 、 and 。 turns into separators just like Western punctuation, and lowercasing applies wherever the script actually has case.

Why did my slug come out empty or much shorter?

Only letters and numbers survive the normalization. A title made entirely of symbols produces an empty result, and repeated punctuation collapses into a single separator, so Hello — world! becomes hello-world rather than a run of dashes. Trim the title back to its letters and digits and the slug reappears.

Should I choose Hyphens or Underscores?

Hyphens are the widely recommended word separator for public URLs and the default for a reason. Underscores are available for platforms and naming schemes that require them; the cleanup rules are identical either way.

Does the slug update while I type?

Yes. The output refreshes with every keystroke and every separator change, there is no button to press, and switching between Hyphens and Underscores re-renders the same normalized text with the other separator instantly.

Is the text I paste uploaded anywhere?

No. The slug is computed entirely inside the current browser tab, the input is never sent or retained, and no account is required. Clearing the workspace discards both panes.
