HEIC to GIF Converter — Free, Local, No Upload

The short answer: Converting a HEIC photo to GIF turns an efficient HEVC image into a still that opens even in tools that predate HEIC support. The encoder quantizes the picture to GIF's 256-color palette and writes a single static frame — there is no quality slider because the format itself caps the color count. The local libheif decoder downloads on first use; the photo never leaves your device.

How to convert HEIC to GIF

Convert HEIC to GIF now

The button opens the Image Format Converter with HEIC → GIF preselected — it runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Open Image Format Converter

Local in your browser — nothing is uploaded

  1. Open the converter

The button above opens the Image Format Converter with the GIF output already selected.

  2. Drop your HEIC file

Add the file (up to 25.0 MiB); the format is verified from its signature, not its name.

  3. Download the result

Save the converted file and compare the exact before-and-after byte sizes.

What to watch

GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame, and HEIC photos routinely use millions, so expect posterization: skin tones shift, skies band, and subtle gradients snap to the nearest palette entry. Burst files decode to their primary image only, depth maps and metadata are dropped, and transparency degrades to 1-bit. Files up to 25 MiB are accepted, within the 8,192 px and 24-megapixel ceiling; animated HEIF sequences are not supported.

When to choose it

Use this only when the destination names GIF — a legacy embed, an old CMS, a sticker pack — and nothing newer. The 256-color ceiling hits photos harder than almost any other source, so when the destination allows it, converting to JPEG keeps full color with universal acceptance, and converting to WebP keeps both color and transparency at a fraction of the size. GIF earns its keep here only for flat, few-color artwork that happens to be stored as HEIC. If decoding fails, export a still as JPEG or PNG from the source app and convert that file instead.

Frequently asked questions

How does this tool decode HEIC without uploading it?
Your browser downloads a small local decoding engine (~3.3 MB, built on the open-source libheif library) the first time you drop a HEIC file, then keeps it cached on your device. The actual HEVC decoding runs in a dedicated worker on your machine — the photo never leaves your device, and repeat conversions skip the download entirely.
Why does the GIF look posterized or color-banded?
GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame, and this converter quantizes the image to that palette — smooth gradients and photos can show banding that was invisible in the HEIC file. Transparency is also reduced to 1-bit: a pixel is fully transparent or fully opaque, so soft edges become jagged. If you need full color, convert to PNG or WebP instead; choose GIF only when the destination requires GIF.
