WebP to GIF Converter — Free, Local, No Upload

The short answer: Converting a WebP to GIF gives you a still in the one format every old tool, chat app, and embed whitelist still accepts. The encoder quantizes the image to GIF's 256-color palette and writes a single static frame — WebP animation is not carried into animated GIF, so the output is always a still. Simple graphics with flat colors survive the palette well; photographic WebP images lose visible quality.

How to convert WebP to GIF

Convert WebP to GIF now

The button opens the Image Format Converter with WebP → GIF preselected — it runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Open Image Format Converter

Local in your browser — nothing is uploaded

  1. Open the converter

The button above opens the Image Format Converter with the GIF output already selected.

  2. Drop your WebP file

Add the file (up to 12.0 MiB); the format is verified from its signature, not its name.

  3. Download the result

Save the converted file and compare the exact before-and-after byte sizes.

What to watch

GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame, so a full-color WebP is posterized: smooth gradients band and subtle shades snap to the nearest palette entry. Transparency degrades from WebP's smooth alpha to GIF's 1-bit transparency — a pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque — so soft edges and shadows turn jagged. An animated WebP loses everything after its first frame, and the workspace discloses that before conversion. Metadata in the WebP container is not carried over.

When to choose it

Use this only when the destination names GIF explicitly: some sticker packs, forum avatars, and legacy CMSs whitelist it and reject WebP outright. For flat logos and icons with few colors, the 256-color ceiling may cost nothing visible and the 1-bit transparency is acceptable. For anything else, this conversion trades quality for reach — WebP already opens in every modern browser, so converting to PNG keeps exact pixels and converting to JPEG keeps full color when transparency is not needed. If what you actually want is the animation back, converting the other way — GIF or WebP sources to MP4 — keeps motion in a modern container.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the GIF look posterized or color-banded?
GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame, and this converter quantizes the image to that palette — smooth gradients and photos can show banding that was invisible in the WebP file. Transparency is also reduced to 1-bit: a pixel is fully transparent or fully opaque, so soft edges become jagged. If you need full color, convert to PNG or WebP instead; choose GIF only when the destination requires GIF.
What happens to the animation?
Only the first frame is decoded; the remaining frames are discarded. The converter discloses this next to the file before you run it, so an animated source becomes a still image.
