Check photo metadata before sharing
What a photo reveals beyond its pixels—location, device, and capture time—how to read that hidden layer, and how to strip it locally before the file leaves your device.
What a photo carries beyond its pixels
Cameras and phones annotate every shot with EXIF fields, and editing apps add XMP and IPTC records on top. None of it is visible in the picture, yet all of it travels inside the file.
- LocationLocation: GPS latitude, longitude, and sometimes altitude—often precise enough to identify a home, an office, or a school.
- DeviceDevice: camera make, model, and lens, plus a body serial number that uniquely ties the photo to your equipment.
- Time and processTime and process: capture time to the second, exposure settings, and the software that edited or exported the file.
Where the hidden layer leaks
The risk is not theoretical. Everyday sharing moves the whole file, and you rarely control what the receiving side keeps.
- ListingsMarketplace and classified listings: selling used gear with photos that carry its serial number and your neighborhood coordinates.
- PlatformsForums, groups, and chats: some platforms strip metadata on upload and some do not—and the ones that do rarely say which fields survive.
- Work filesWork handoffs: an exported screenshot or a phone photo of a whiteboard can reveal device details and exact working hours.
Read the metadata before anything leaves
EXIF Metadata Viewer opens a JPEG or PNG in the browser tab and lists exactly what the file says—no upload, no account, no guesswork.
Six whitelist groups show GPS coordinates as plain decimal text with no map request, camera and lens details with the body serial flagged highly sensitive, capture times, exposure settings, and file facts. JPEG files also report XMP, IPTC, comment, and color-profile segments; PNG files list their text and EXIF chunks. WebP and GIF carry no segments the tool can read, and the workspace says so instead of pretending otherwise.

Removal happens in the same tab. The default tier rebuilds the file keeping only what decoding needs, so the pixels stay byte-identical while the metadata is gone.

What metadata removal cannot fix
Some sensitive details are in the picture itself: a face in the background, a license plate, an ID number on a desk, a colleague's email on a screen.

Run this sequence on any photo before it goes to a stranger, a platform, or a public channel.
