How to extract text from an image

  1. 01

    Choose an image

    PNG / JPEG · Up to 8 MiB · 4 megapixels · 4096 px per side

  2. 02

    Recognize text

Choose a recognition language. The first run downloads about 4 MB of engine files plus a 0.4–2 MB language pack from this site; the pack is stored for offline use. Recognition runs locally; images and text are not stored. Memory use can exceed file size, and mobile devices may be slower. Stops after 90 seconds.

  3. 03

    Copy text

Check the text before using it. Printed text works best; handwriting, tables and PDFs are outside this version’s scope. For mixed Chinese-English documents pick a Chinese model — it also reads Latin letters.

Common questions

Which images are supported?
PNG / JPEG · Up to 8 MiB · 4 megapixels · 4096 px per side. Check the text before using it. Printed text works best; handwriting, tables and PDFs are outside this version’s scope. For mixed Chinese-English documents pick a Chinese model — it also reads Latin letters.
Does my image leave my device?
Recognition runs entirely in your browser. On first use, about 4 MB of engine files and the language pack you picked (0.4–2 MB) load from this site's own addresses; your image and the recognized text never leave the tab.
Can I use OCR offline?
Yes, for languages you have used before. After the first download, engine files and language packs are kept in the browser's offline cache, so recognition keeps working without a network. A brand-new language still needs one download.
Which languages are supported?
Thirteen printed-text languages: English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Hindi and Indonesian. Choose one before recognizing; its model pack (0.4–2 MB) downloads once from this site and is then available offline. Clean printed text gives the best results — Hindi (Devanagari) may need extra checking in complex layouts.
How do I recognize documents that mix languages?
Choose the model that matches the main script. Chinese models also read embedded Latin letters, so a Chinese-English document works with a Chinese model. If a result looks wrong, split the document by language and recognize each part separately.
