How to convert Excel files in your browser

    Choose a direction and a file

    Pick XLSX → CSV, XLSX → JSON, or CSV → XLSX, then add a file up to 50 MiB. For .xlsx inputs the sheet list is read first so you can choose which sheet to convert.

    Set the output dialect

    For CSV output choose the separator and whether to add the UTF-8 BOM bytes EF BB BF at the beginning. For JSON choose whether column names are trimmed; the output is an array of objects keyed by the first row.

  3. 03

    Convert and download

    Press Convert to process the file in a Worker. The result shows row and column counts plus a preview of up to 20 rows; check headers and non-ASCII sample values, confirm the selected separator, then click Download. The file is not downloaded automatically, and output above 32 MiB is refused rather than truncated.

When Excel Converter is useful

Add a UTF-8 BOM to Chinese CSV

Make a Data sheet with city,total as the first row and 上海,4 as the second. Convert XLSX → CSV with comma and Add UTF-8 BOM on. The download starts with EF BB BF and its CRLF-separated text reads city,total then 上海,4. Turn BOM off only if your importer requires a marker-free UTF-8 file.

Check a formula's saved value

If a cell contains =2+3 but the workbook stores 4 as its old cached result, CSV and JSON export 4, not 5. Open the workbook in a spreadsheet app, recalculate and save it, then convert again. Formula expressions and formatting are not exported.

Repair duplicate JSON columns

For XLSX → JSON, a header row of city,city is rejected because the column names are duplicated; no field is silently overwritten. Rename the second header to total, save the workbook and run again; a row 上海,4 then becomes an object with city and total keys.

What Excel Converter actually does

A team receives a workbook with Orders and Notes sheets but needs an Orders CSV for a data pipeline. Select Orders, keep the UTF-8 BOM for colleagues opening the CSV in Excel, and choose the required separator. After conversion, inspect the headers and sample rows, then download; repeat with Notes only if needed. The original workbook stays on the device.

Common questions

Are formulas recalculated?
No. A formula cell contributes the value cached by the application that last saved the file. If the cache is stale, open the file in a spreadsheet app, recalculate and save, then convert again.
Why does my CSV show garbled Chinese characters in Excel?
Add UTF-8 BOM prefixes the CSV with EF BB BF. This tool writes those bytes but cannot verify how a target version of Excel or another app decodes the file. Check the imported text there.
What happens to styles, merged cells, and multiple sheets?
Only values are converted. Formatting, merged cells, and column widths are not preserved. For .xlsx input you pick one sheet per conversion; run it again with another sheet selected for the rest.
How large a file can I convert?
Up to 50 MiB packed input (a .xlsx ZIP may expand to 200 MiB of worksheet XML) and up to 32 MiB of output, with at most 256 columns. Files past a limit are refused with a clear message, never silently truncated.
