How to convert between MP4 and GIF

    Choose the direction and a file

    Pick MP4 → GIF or GIF → MP4, then add a file up to 100 MB and 60 seconds. MP4 video and animated GIF are supported; anything else is refused with a clear error instead of being downgraded.

    Tune the output

    For GIF output choose frames per second, width up to 960 px, and a palette quality tier. For MP4 output choose the width and an H.264 quality tier. A hint under the settings explains what each tier does.

    Convert and download

    Press Convert; the roughly 31 MiB engine downloads on first use. When conversion finishes, inspect the GIF or MP4 preview and output size, then click Download. Output above 50 MiB is refused: lower frame rate or width for GIF and retry. Cancel stops a running job.

What Video GIF Converter actually does

A developer turns a 20-second MP4 screen recording into a README loop. She selects MP4 → GIF, 10 fps, 480 px and Balanced, then checks the motion and file size in the local preview. If the GIF exceeds the output limit, she lowers the frame rate or width and converts again before downloading. A GIF → MP4 run uses the same review step but produces a muted H.264 video.

Common questions

Which files are supported?
MP4 video and animated GIF, each up to 100 MB and 60 seconds. Clips beyond either limit, and containers like WebM or AVI, are refused with a clear message — nothing is silently truncated or downgraded.
Does my video leave my device?
No. ffmpeg.wasm runs entirely in this browser and the file is never uploaded, logged, or shared. The engine itself (~31 MB) is downloaded from this site on first use and cached locally for instant reuse, including offline.
Why is there a 60-second limit?
Browser transcoding shares your device’s CPU and memory. The 60-second and 100 MB ceilings keep conversion time and memory use predictable on phones and laptops; longer jobs belong in a desktop encoder.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
Lower the frame rate first — 10 fps is enough for most clips — then the width, then the quality tier. GIF stores every frame with palette compression, so size grows quickly with fps × width × duration.
